Volunteering at The Trust

Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.

With over 100 active volunteers, we’re proud to run our boats seven days a week and offer memorable, accessible trips to thousands of people each year. Our volunteer-led model has been formally recognised with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service - the highest honour a UK voluntary group can receive, often described as the MBE for volunteer groups.

JOIN OUR TEAM OF SKIPPERS

Fancy taking the helm? We’re always looking for new volunteer skippers to join our crew.

Our skippers are responsible for safely navigating our boats and helping to deliver unforgettable trips for our passengers. You don’t need to have prior boating experience - just a calm, confident approach and a willingness to learn.

We provide:

  • All training and support are free of charge, including over 60 hours of formal instruction.

  • Accredited Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) training, leading to a recognised Boat Master’s Licence (BML).

  • Hands-on experience working alongside our experienced skippers and crew.

  • A flexible schedule that works around your availability.

  • The chance to support a unique local charity and meet a wide variety of passengers.

If you’re interested in becoming a skipper, please get in touch - we’ll be happy to tell you more and arrange a visit to our base.

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Support our skippers with safe boarding, passenger care and help throughout each boat trip.

Help maintain our beautiful on-site gardens, including our floral displays for Loughborough in Bloom.

Join our fundraising team to plan events, apply for grants and dream up creative ways to raise money for the Trust.

Support the running of art, craft, or wellbeing sessions aboard the boats or at our base.

Assist with light admin, booking support, or community outreach - ideal for those who prefer to help behind the scenes.

Richard Ellison - Crew Member

I’ve been volunteering for almost 10 years. I think the longevity of this involvement is related to the pleasure I get from meeting in particular those people less fortunate than me. What a privilege it is to witness passengers sigh with relaxation as a result of the gentle motion of the boat.
